Following this he transitioned to industry first working for the drug delivery company RP Scherer in Swindon after which he joined Pfizer Global R&D at Sandwich.

Eddie is the current Chairman of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Scientists of Great Britain (APSGB) and also a visiting senior lecturer at Kings College London. In any spare time he has he is a keen on all sports and games and outdoor activities. Sometimes he can still be seen puffing round the rugby field, although as his body reminds him, he should really know better.

Richard has experience in a wide range of physical analytical techniques as well as automation from both industrial environments and during his academic studies to PhD in the area of crystallisation.

Richard is currently the treasurer and a board member of the APS.

  Ms Helen Barker
Helen is a Pharmaceutical Sciences Team Leader at Pfizer, leading the strategic and technical development of a portfolio of inhaled and oral programs.

Helen graduated from the University of Sunderland, UK with a BSc. (Hons) in Chemical and Pharmaceutical Science and worked for a year with Bristol-Myers Squibb, primarily developing analytical methods for API and drug product, before joining Pfizer in 1997.

Whilst at Pfizer, Helen has led formulation teams, multidisciplinary and global teams, designed solid drug products and developed research strategies. Research areas include investigations into reactions in the solid state, particle characterization, predictive tests and intelligent software.

With 13 years’ experience, Helen is a collaborative and motivational leader who develops high-performing multi-disciplinary teams. Through experience and training, she is skilled in risk management, complex problem solving and has a strong track record of successful delivery.

Following an invitation by the New Scientists Focus Group to present at the BPC, Helen became a member of the APS in 2001. She joined the NSFG as a committee member soon after and was elected to the Board in 2008.

Key interests include continuous improvement, initiation and development of new concepts and influencing key opinion leaders - both scientists and non-scientists. Valued social time includes spending quality time with family and friends, music concerts and long walks (or short runs!) through the local woodlands.

Prof Donald Cairns
Donald Cairns was born in Glasgow, Scotland and attended the University of Strathclyde where he read Pharmacy. Following qualification, he worked in a number of hospitals then returned to Strathclyde to complete his doctorate researching into long-acting local anaesthetics and tranquillisers.

In 1986, Dr Cairns was appointed post-doctoral research fellow for the UK Cancer Research Campaign where he developed computer protocols for the molecular modelling of drug interactions with DNA.

In 1987, he received a lectureship in the School of Pharmacy at Leicester and in 1992 was appointed to the post of Senior Lecturer in Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Sunderland.

In October 2003, Dr Cairns was appointed Associate Head of the School of Pharmacy at The Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen and in 2006 was appointed Professor of Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry at the University.

Prof Cairns has research interests in the rational design of anticancer drugs, molecular modelling of drug interactions with higher-order DNA and the design and synthesis of novel prodrugs for the treatment of nephropathic cystinosis. He has published over 50 research papers and is the author of a best-selling undergraduate textbook on Pharmaceutical Chemistry.

In addition to membership of APS, Prof. Cairns is a member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

  Dr Jeremy Clarke
Jeremy has over has over 15 years experience in product development gained through R&D positions in both the pharmaceutical and drug delivery industries. A pharmacist by training, Dr. Clarke joined Novartis (Ciba) in 1992 following a Ph.D. in pharmaceutical aerosol technology at the Welsh School of Pharmacy.

At the end of 1999, Dr. Clarke left his position as Head of Pharmaceutical Development at Novartis’ Horsham Research Centre to join drug delivery start-up Vectura, where he was responsible for the management of the contract drug product development service, in addition to overseeing a number of Vectura’s co-development alliances.

Jeremy joined Pfizer in 2002 initially as a Manager in the Inhalation Product Development group and since 2006 has been a Director in the Materials Science & Oral Products group. Jeremy was elected to the APS Board in September 2006 having previously lead the APS Inhalation Focus Group. Currently Jeremy is editor of the APS Newsletter and co-ordinates the APS Seminar Programme.
