Dr Eddie French - Chairman
Eddie French is currently Director of the UK Pharmaceutical
Sciences Vaccines Delivery Group within Pfizer Global R&D. He has been at
Pfizer for over 14 years working in the area of drug delivery, formulation
and analytical science. His main interest is in the field of biotechnology
looking at the pre-formulation, formulation and characterisation of
biopharmaceuticals, notably proteins and nucleotides. He also has a wide
experience of drug product development for Pfizer’s inhaled drug portfolio.
This included involvement in the inhaled insulin (Exubera™) project
Eddie has a BSc in Biochemistry and gained a PhD in the area of transdermal
drug delivery from the School of Pharmacy at the University of Bath. After
his PhD he remained at Bath and was appointed as a lecturer in
Pharmaceutics, a position he held for 3 years. Following this he
transitioned to industry first working for the drug delivery company RP
Scherer in Swindon after which he joined Pfizer Global R&D at Sandwich.
Eddie is the current Chairman of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Scientists of
Great Britain (APSGB) and also a visiting senior lecturer at Kings College
London. In any spare time he has he is a keen on all sports and games and
outdoor activities. Sometimes he can still be seen puffing round the rugby
field, although as his body reminds him, he should really know better. |

Prof Martin Snowden - Vice
Chairman
Professor Martin Snowden is a physical chemist having an
international research profile in the area of colloid and polymer science
as it relates to preformulation and formulation science.
Over 100 original
published works to-date including a number of invited papers and reviews.
Very strong industrial links have led to the generation of in excess of
£3m in research funding. Editorial board member of the ACS journal,
Langmuir.
An active consultant
who is regularly invited to deliver short courses in colloid and polymer
science to industrial organisations including Procter & Gamble, BP Amoco,
Glaxo Smith Kline and the Singapore Institute of Standards.

Dr Richard Storey - Treasurer
Richard’s background is primarily in solid-state and
materials science. He has worked in both early and late stage development
since he joined AstraZeneca in 2003.
His current role is in the area of
process understanding and the identification of critical quality attributes
for formulation. Previously Richard has been heavily involved in salt and
polymorph selection in his current role and in Pfizer.
Richard has experience in a wide range
of physical analytical techniques as well as automation from both industrial
environments and during his academic studies to PhD in the area of
crystallisation.
Richard is currently the treasurer and
a board member of the APS. |

Ms Helen Barker
Helen is a
Pharmaceutical Sciences Team Leader at Pfizer, leading the strategic and
technical development of a portfolio of inhaled and oral programs.
Helen graduated from the University of Sunderland, UK with a BSc. (Hons) in
Chemical and Pharmaceutical Science and worked for a year with Bristol-Myers
Squibb, primarily developing analytical methods for API and drug product,
before joining Pfizer in 1997.
Whilst at Pfizer, Helen has led formulation teams, multidisciplinary and
global teams, designed solid drug products and developed research
strategies. Research areas include investigations into reactions in the
solid state, particle characterization, predictive tests and intelligent
software.
With 13 years’ experience, Helen is a collaborative and motivational leader
who develops high-performing multi-disciplinary teams. Through experience
and training, she is skilled in risk management, complex problem solving and
has a strong track record of successful delivery.
Following an invitation by the New Scientists Focus Group to present at the
BPC, Helen became a member of the APS in 2001. She joined the NSFG as a
committee member soon after and was elected to the Board in 2008.
Key interests include continuous improvement, initiation and development of
new concepts and influencing key opinion leaders - both scientists and
non-scientists. Valued social time includes spending quality time with
family and friends, music concerts and long walks (or short runs!) through
the local woodlands. |

Prof Donald Cairns
Donald Cairns was born in Glasgow, Scotland and attended
the University of Strathclyde where he read Pharmacy. Following
qualification, he worked in a number of hospitals then returned to
Strathclyde to complete his doctorate researching into long-acting local
anaesthetics and tranquillisers.
In 1986, Dr Cairns was appointed post-doctoral research fellow for the UK
Cancer Research Campaign where he developed computer protocols for the
molecular modelling of drug interactions with DNA.
In 1987, he received a lectureship in the School of Pharmacy at Leicester
and in 1992 was appointed to the post of Senior Lecturer in Medicinal
Chemistry at the University of Sunderland.
In October 2003, Dr Cairns was appointed Associate Head of the School of
Pharmacy at The Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen and in 2006 was
appointed Professor of Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry at the
University.
Prof Cairns has research interests in the rational design of anticancer
drugs, molecular modelling of drug interactions with higher-order DNA and
the design and synthesis of novel prodrugs for the treatment of
nephropathic cystinosis. He has published over 50 research papers and is
the author of a best-selling undergraduate textbook on Pharmaceutical
Chemistry.
In addition to membership of APS, Prof. Cairns is a member of the Royal
Pharmaceutical Society and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. |

Dr Jeremy Clarke
Jeremy has over has over 15 years
experience in product development gained through R&D positions in both the
pharmaceutical and drug delivery industries. A pharmacist by training, Dr.
Clarke joined Novartis (Ciba) in 1992 following a Ph.D. in pharmaceutical
aerosol technology at the Welsh School of Pharmacy.
At the end of 1999, Dr. Clarke left
his position as Head of Pharmaceutical Development at Novartis’ Horsham
Research Centre to join drug delivery start-up Vectura, where he was
responsible for the management of the contract drug product development
service, in addition to overseeing a number of Vectura’s co-development
alliances.
Jeremy joined Pfizer in 2002
initially as a Manager in the Inhalation Product Development group and since
2006 has been a Director in the Materials Science & Oral Products group.
Jeremy was elected to the APS Board in September 2006 having previously lead
the APS Inhalation Focus Group. Currently Jeremy is editor of the APS
Newsletter and co-ordinates the APS Seminar Programme. |

Dr Francesca Greco
F. Greco is Lecturer in Pharmaceutics
at the School of Pharmacy at the University of Reading, UK. She graduated
from Pisa University in 2002 (Masters degree in Pharmacy) with a final
result of 110/110 cum laude and a medal for recognition of excellence from
the Vice Chancellor. Between 2001-2002, Francesca undertook a one-year
research project in the laboratories of Pharmacia (now Pfizer) in Milan
(Italy), as part of her Masters degree. From 2002 to 2006 she successfully
undertook a PhD project in drug delivery under the supervision of Prof.
Duncan, Prof. Nicholson and Dr Vicent, at the Welsh School of Pharmacy,
Cardiff University. Following the award of her PhD Francesca was appointed
as Lecturer in Pharmaceutics at the School of Pharmacy at the University of
Reading (July 2006). Since her appointment, FG has secured research funding
and is currently supervising three PhD students and one postdoctoral
researcher. Francesca teaches in Pharmaceutics since October 2007 she has
taken the role of Senior Tutor.
Her research in polymer-drug conjugates led to several publications in
peer-reviewed journals and her work has been presented at national and
international conferences. Francesca was awarded prizes for her research,
including an award for her oral presentation at the British Pharmaceutical
Conference (Manchester, UK, 2004), a student poster highlight at a
Controlled Release Society meeting (Miami, Florida, 2005) and she has been
invited to the “Roche Symposium for leading scientists of the next decade”
(Basel, Switzerland, 2007). Francesca acts as referee for scientific
journals including the Journal of Controlled Release, Molecular
Pharmaceutics and the Journal of Biomaterials Applications and for funding
bodies, including EPSRC. |

Dr Claire Martin
Dr. Claire Martin completed her PhD in pharmaceutics at The School of
Pharmacy, University of London. Key research themes were further developed
during a BBSRC-funded postdoctoral fellowship which examined development of
novel homogenisation strategies for biopharmaceutical products. Claire
joined the University of Wolverhampton in April 2006 and is Senior Lecturer
in Pharmaceutics. Her current research interests include
• Environmentally responsive controlled release delivery systems for wound
management
• Formulation development of novel antimicrobial agents
• Application of electrical impedance analysis to behaviour of
macromolecules and excipients in the frozen state.
• Enhancing stability of biopharmaceuticals through novel formulation and
processing strategies.
• Development of homogenisation techniques to minimise degradation
• characterisation of “soft” drug delivery vehicles by atomic force
microscopy |

Dr Claire Thompson
From a degree in Biochemistry at University of St. Andrews,
Claire moved into the pharmaceutical arena via a PhD at School of Pharmacy,
University of Nottingham under Professor Clive Roberts.
Claire then progressed into industry through a post-doctoral position at
Pfizer Global R&D, Sandwich. It was here that she developed her expertise in
assessing the physical attributes of drug substance intended for inhaled
formulations.
In 2005, Claire joined GlaxoSmithKline as Senior Scientist supporting the
physical property characterisation of API during development. She then
progressed to Principal Scientist, leading the physical property
determination of drug products and heading a global Technical Expert Team.
In Oct 2009, Claire joined Molecular Profiles as Associate Director of
Preformulation. |
